Our view

Why we picked it

We picked this voyage because it gives each of the Southern Ocean’s headline wildlife regions enough space to feel like a destination—not a hurried addition to an Antarctic Peninsula trip.

The Falklands bring seabird colonies, gentoo and rockhopper penguins and a completely different landscape from Antarctica. South Georgia is the centrepiece: vast king penguin colonies, elephant seals, fur seals and mountains rising straight from the sea. The Peninsula then changes the scale again, replacing tussock and beaches with ice, glaciers and zodiac cruising.

Best for

Wildlife-focused travellers who can give the journey three weeks and want South Georgia to be a major part of the expedition.

The standout

A 114-guest, all-suite ship is a strong fit for landing-intensive places where time ashore and efficient zodiac operations matter.

Bear in mind

This is a long ocean voyage with several exposed sea passages. Sea Spirit has stabilisers, but no ship removes Southern Ocean movement.

Why Sea Spirit’s size matters

Poseidon explains how a 114-guest ship shapes landings, expedition logistics and the atmosphere aboard.

Voyage overview

The 21-day itinerary sails from Ushuaia to the Falkland Islands, continues to South Georgia, then turns south-west for the Antarctic Peninsula before returning across the Drake Passage.

This is not a fixed port itinerary. The expedition leader and captain assess wind, swell, landing conditions, wildlife activity and local restrictions each day. Several possible sites may be considered before the final plan is announced aboard.

EA perspective: The combination of 114 guests and an experienced expedition operation is one of the reasons this voyage stands out. Antarctic sites normally limit the number of visitors ashore at once, but the ship is still small enough to keep movements relatively quick and rotations limited when required.

The 23-day March departures visit Antarctica first, then South Georgia and the Falklands, before finishing in Buenos Aires. The map is indicative; landing sites remain subject to conditions and permits.

The Falklands add penguin and albatross colonies, wildlife-rich beaches and broad coastal landscapes before the voyage reaches South Georgia.

November and January: 21-day programme

The programme includes a hotel night on day 1 and embarkation on day 2. Five days are planned in South Georgia and four in the Antarctic Peninsula region. The March voyages follow the separate route below.

Phase 1

Ushuaia and the FalklandsEmbarkation, seabirds and the first landings
Days 1–2

Ushuaia hotel night and embarkation

Day 1 includes an airport-to-hotel group transfer and an overnight stay at Arakur Ushuaia Resort & Spa. On day 2, transfer to the pier and board Sea Spirit in the afternoon before sailing through the Beagle Channel.

The dates below start with the included hotel night. We can help arrange additional buffer nights and suitable flights around your programme.

Days 3–5

Across to the Falkland Islands

Day 3 is at sea; days 4–5 are planned in the Falkland Islands. Expedition briefings and seabird watching accompany the crossing. In the Falklands, the team may target wildlife-rich outer islands as well as Stanley, depending on the voyage plan and conditions.

Expect a gentler, greener landscape than Antarctica, with penguins using beaches and tussock-covered slopes. Rockhoppers, gentoos, Magellanic penguins and black-browed albatrosses are among the possibilities. Stanley adds history and a small settlement to a voyage otherwise dominated by remote shorelines.

A separate destination

More than a stop on the way

The Falklands are worth treating as their own part of the expedition: different wildlife, different terrain and some of the finest seabird colonies in the South Atlantic.

Phase 2

South GeorgiaKing penguins, seals and expedition history
Days 6–12

Cross the Scotia Sea and explore South Georgia

Days 6–7 are at sea and days 8–12 are the five planned South Georgia days. The crossing is productive wildlife-watching time, with the expedition team running lectures and preparing guests for South Georgia’s strict biosecurity requirements. Clothing, bags, footwear and equipment are checked and cleaned before the first landing.

Once at South Georgia, possible sites include beaches crowded with king penguins, elephant seals and fur seals, as well as Grytviken and locations connected to the island’s whaling and Shackleton history. Landings can be extraordinarily rich, but surf, swell and wildlife density determine where the team can operate safely.

The strongest days often combine a substantial landing with time cruising by zodiac. A flexible small-ship team can change the order, move to a more sheltered bay or extend a productive wildlife encounter when conditions allow.

The expedition centrepiece

Wildlife on a different scale

South Georgia is the reason to choose this longer voyage. King penguin colonies can stretch far beyond a single viewpoint, backed by glaciers and steep mountain ridges.

Phase 3

Antarctic PeninsulaIce, landings and zodiac exploration
Days 13–18

South-west towards Antarctica

Days 13–14 are at sea; days 15–18 are the four planned Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands days. All guests attend the mandatory IAATO briefing, covering wildlife distances, protected sites, safe movement ashore and the behaviour expected during landings.

Around the South Shetland Islands and western Peninsula, each day is built around the best safe opportunity. That might mean a penguin-colony landing, a walk to a viewpoint, a zodiac cruise through ice or time watching whales and seals. The actual sites cannot be guaranteed in advance.

Sea Spirit’s 114-guest capacity keeps the expedition relatively compact. The difference is most noticeable when a weather window is short: fewer people are faster to dress, load and move through the gangway than on a 300–500 guest ship.

Phase 4

Return northThe Drake Passage and disembarkation
Days 19–21

Drake Passage and Ushuaia

Turn north across the Drake Passage, with final lectures, wildlife watching and time to review photographs. The 21-day voyages normally disembark in Ushuaia on the final morning. Avoid an early onward flight.

Days 19–20 cross the Drake Passage; day 21 is disembarkation in Ushuaia with the operator’s group transfer.

A small ship and an experienced expedition team make it possible to work efficiently with the day’s conditions, moving between ship, zodiac and shore without the operation feeling cumbersome.

March: 23-day programme to Buenos Aires

10 March–1 April 2027 and 9–31 March 2028: day 1 Ushuaia hotel; day 2 embarkation; days 3–4 Drake Passage; days 5–8 Antarctica; days 9–10 at sea; days 11–14 South Georgia; days 15–16 at sea; days 17–18 Falkland Islands; days 19–22 northbound at sea; day 23 Buenos Aires disembarkation. This plan allocates four days to Antarctica and four to South Georgia. All outings depend on conditions.

Your ship

Sea Spirit

Sea Spirit is an all-suite expedition ship carrying up to 114 guests. She combines a relatively low passenger count with more generous cabin and public-space dimensions than many expedition-first ships around the 100-guest mark.

An ice-strengthened Ice Class 1D hull supports planned polar operations, while retractable fin stabilisers are useful on the exposed passages between the three regions. They improve comfort but do not make the ship immune to movement.
