Why we picked it

A very complete package with less arranging around the edges

HX costs more than the simplest small-ship option, but the Santiago hotel, domestic flights, drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities and broader onboard facilities make the true comparison closer than the headline fare suggests.

Best for

Travellers wanting a comfortable, inclusive expedition with strong science, lectures and a polished onboard experience.

The standout

Four planned days in both South Georgia and Antarctica, plus three days around the Falklands.

Bear in mind

At 200 guests, landing operations are more structured and normally use rotations. MS Fram is not as operationally nimble as a 108-guest ship.

Why South Georgia matters

The wildlife heart of the voyage

HX’s official South Georgia film captures the scale of its king penguin colonies, seals and mountain-backed landing sites.

The itinerary

Day-by-day expedition plan

The sequence is published, but daily landing choices remain flexible around weather, sea conditions, wildlife sensitivity and local restrictions.

Day 1

Santiago de Chile

Arrive in Santiago. One hotel night with breakfast is included before the expedition.

Santiago de Chile before the expedition
Santiago de Chile – the included pre-expedition stop
Day 2

Fly to Punta Arenas and embark

HX includes the economy flight from Santiago and the pre-cruise hotel-to-airport transfer. Board MS Fram in Punta Arenas.

Day 3

Strait of Magellan

Settle into the ship, meet the expedition team and begin the lecture and Science Centre programme.

Days 4-6

Falkland Islands

Three days are planned for Stanley and the more remote islands, with hikes, community visits and chances for albatrosses, penguins and seals.

Days 7-8

South Atlantic crossing

Lectures, wildlife watches and biosecurity preparation lead into South Georgia.

Days 9-12

South Georgia

Four days give the team scope to work around conditions and sensitive breeding wildlife. King penguins, fur and elephant seals, alpine scenery and Grytviken are among the possibilities.

Days 13-15

Towards Antarctica

Three sea days offer time for science projects, lectures and wildlife spotting as the ship approaches the Antarctic Peninsula.

Days 16-19

Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetlands

Four expedition days are planned for landings and small-boat cruising among glaciers, penguin colonies and sculpted ice.

Days 20-22

Drake Passage and Beagle Channel

Final lectures and recaps accompany the return through the Southern Ocean.

Day 23

Punta Arenas to Santiago

Disembark and take the included economy flight back to Santiago.

The Antarctic experience

Ice, wildlife and the scale of the Peninsula

HX’s official Antarctica film gives a feel for small-boat cruising, landing days and life amid the ice.

The ship

MS Fram after her
recent refurbishment

MS Fram is a purpose-built polar ship carrying 200 guests. She combines extensive exterior decks with a large Science Centre, two restaurants, panoramic Explorer Lounge, sauna, gym and outdoor hot tubs.

The operating difference

Antarctic landing guidelines generally allow no more than 100 passengers ashore from a vessel at one time, and some sites permit fewer. With up to 200 guests aboard, MS Fram therefore operates scheduled landing groups and parallel activities. The trade-off is a more comprehensive onboard environment and a highly inclusive fare.
