Arctic Sights and Northern Lights
Scoresby Sund’s icebergs and autumn nights aboard the small expedition ship Sea Spirit.
Why we picked it
An appealing choice when East Greenland’s scenery and a small-ship atmosphere matter most, with September darkness adding the possibility of northern lights.
The balance here is several days in Scoresby Sund, comfortable all-suite accommodation and straightforward Reykjavík access. We would recommend it for travellers drawn to fjords, photography and walking, with realistic expectations about sea crossings and aurora sightings.
Sea Spirit carries up to 114 guests.
Five planned expedition days in East Greenland.
Darkening nights create aurora opportunities; clear skies and solar activity still matter.

Voyage overview
The programme begins with a hotel night in Reykjavík, followed by embarkation, the Denmark Strait crossing, East Greenland and a return via Iceland’s Westfjords.
The 11-day programme includes one hotel night and a 10-day cruise. The itinerary below follows 5–15 September 2027. The later September sailing is advertised as German-language.
Day-by-day plan
Arrive in Reykjavík
Check into the included hotel and enjoy time at leisure in Reykjavík. The waterfront, museums and cafés provide a gentle start before the expedition. Your arrival transfer and meals are arranged separately.

Welcome aboard Sea Spirit
After time in Reykjavík, take the group transfer to the ship. Meet the expedition team, settle into your suite and attend safety briefings as the voyage gets underway.

Cross the Denmark Strait
Sail north towards East Greenland. Watch for seabirds and whales from deck, and use the crossing to learn about the places ahead. Dark skies may bring a first opportunity to look for northern lights.

Scoresby Sund and East Greenland
Spend five expedition days among the fjords, islands and iceberg-filled waterways of Scoresby Sund. Zodiac cruises and hikes reveal the scale of the landscape at close range. The team plans a visit to Ittoqqortoormiit, subject to local arrangements, and may explore sites that connect the region with earlier Inuit life. Each day’s route responds to ice and weather; these are flexible exploration days rather than fixed ports. After dark, watch for the northern lights when sky conditions allow.

Return across the Denmark Strait
Turn towards Iceland, with presentations, photography and time on deck. This is a chance to reflect on the Greenland days, share images and keep watching the sea for wildlife.

Iceland’s Westfjords
Explore a remote coast of deep fjords and rugged mountains. Shore visits and Zodiac activities depend on the day’s conditions, with the possibility of birds and marine wildlife along the way.

Disembark in Reykjavík
After breakfast, leave Sea Spirit in Reykjavík. The operator provides a group transfer to Keflavík airport or a central hotel for luggage storage; we help coordinate your onward plans.

Indicative operator programme. Weather, ice, permissions, community arrangements and wildlife determine the final route. Images illustrate the region and experience; sightings and individual landings cannot be guaranteed.
