Our view

Why we picked it

This departure works particularly well for travellers using the Christmas and New Year break. Sea Spirit keeps the group to 114 guests, while the included Ushuaia hotel night, spacious suites, house drinks, Wi-Fi, parka and boots make the journey easy to plan.

Best for

Travellers who value landing efficiency, a friendly 114-guest atmosphere and an expedition-first programme more than contemporary ship design.

The standout

When the kayaking group operates separately, the remaining guests can generally land as one group rather than working through the rotations common on larger ships.

Bear in mind

Sea Spirit is an older, traditional ship. Suites are spacious and comfortable, but the design is less modern than newer X-BOW vessels such as Ocean Albatros or Ocean Victory.

Meet the ship

Why Sea Spirit’s size matters

Poseidon’s short film explains how a 114-guest ship changes the rhythm of an expedition—from landing logistics to the atmosphere aboard.

Map of Poseidon Expeditions New Year in Antarctica route

The experience

A festive-season Peninsula route, properly paced

This itinerary allocates five flexible days to the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula. The expedition leader chooses landings and Zodiac cruises around weather, ice and wildlife rather than following a rigid port schedule.

The route normally includes penguin colonies, glacier-lined bays, iceberg-filled channels and opportunities to look for seals and whales. Hiking and photography guidance are part of the core programme; kayaking and camping are limited optional activities and differ by departure.

The EA insight

The advantage here is operational scale, not a promise of more landings. Antarctica controls the schedule. Sea Spirit simply gives the team fewer passenger movements to manage when a short weather window appears.

Life on expedition

A typical day in Antarctica

Poseidon’s expedition team explains how a day unfolds aboard Sea Spirit—from the morning briefing and first Zodiac launch to landings, wildlife encounters and the evening recap.

Day-by-day plan

The precise sites remain flexible. This is the usual structure rather than a guaranteed landing list.

Ushuaia between the Beagle Channel and Martial Mountains
Ushuaia: the gateway city where the voyage begins and ends.
Day 1

Arrive in Ushuaia

Poseidon meets guests at Ushuaia Airport on the scheduled arrival day and transfers the group to the included pre-voyage hotel. The afternoon is free, followed by the operator’s practical embarkation arrangements.

Day 2

Embark Sea Spirit

A group transfer connects the hotel and ship. After embarkation, the team completes safety briefings and begins the journey through the Beagle Channel.

Days 3-4

Cross the Drake Passage

Lectures, wildlife watching and biosecurity preparation fill the crossing. Wandering albatrosses, petrels and the transition across the Antarctic Convergence provide the first signs of the Southern Ocean ecosystem.

Days 5-9

South Shetlands and Antarctic Peninsula

Five days are available for landings, Zodiac cruising, wildlife encounters and hikes. Possible areas include the South Shetland Islands, Gerlache Strait and the Lemaire Channel, but the captain and expedition leader continually adjust the route.

Days 10-11

Return across the Drake

The ship turns north for final lectures, wildlife watches and the expedition recap.

Day 12

Disembark in Ushuaia

A group transfer is included to Ushuaia Airport or a central location immediately after disembarkation. Poseidon recommends booking flights from noon or later.

The human scale

A small expedition community

One of Sea Spirit’s quieter advantages is the atmosphere created by travelling with 114 guests. The expedition team becomes familiar, briefings feel personal and the ship develops a genuine group rhythm over twelve days.

Why it matters

The ship’s size affects more than landing logistics. It also shapes how readily guests, guides and crew get to know one another during the voyage.

The people who shape the voyage

Poseidon’s expedition leaders introduce their polar backgrounds, what draws them back to Antarctica and the onboard rhythm they create for guests.

Sea Spirit and her cabins

Sea Spirit carries 114 guests in suite-style accommodation. The ship has an ice-strengthened hull, retractable fin stabilisers, a fleet of Zodiacs and larger cabins than many expedition ships of a similar size.

Festive-season departure

28 December 2026–8 January 2027

Arrive in Ushuaia on 28 December for the included hotel night, embark Sea Spirit on 29 December and return on 8 January. New Year falls during the expedition, with the celebration shaped around the landing and wildlife programme.

Kayaking

Poseidon’s Sea Kayak Club is a multi-session programme. Places are limited and must be confirmed.

Camping

An optional night ashore may be offered when weather, ice and site permissions allow.

Photography

Photography support is part of the expedition programme, with long Antarctic daylight at this time of year.

Solo travellers and friends sharing

Poseidon’s Request-Share guarantee

This is one of the clearest reasons to shortlist Poseidon. A solo traveller can request a same-gender cabin mate in eligible categories and pay the normal shared per-person fare. If Poseidon cannot provide a match, it waives the single supplement rather than moving the traveller to a solo price.

Request-Share

Available in Triple, Main Deck, Classic and Superior Suites, subject to the operator’s current terms.

Private cabin

Main Deck, Classic and Superior Suites normally price at 1.7 times the shared fare for sole occupancy.

Higher suites

Deluxe, Premium and Owner’s Suites normally carry a 2-times sole-occupancy multiplier.

Travelling as two singles?

If two friends already intend to share, we ask Poseidon to confirm the correct twin-bed setup and cabin category rather than relying on the matching programme. If each wants a private cabin, we compare dedicated Single Suites with the 1.7-times options.
