South Georgia, Falklands & Antarctic Odyssey
A long wildlife-led expedition linking the Falklands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula aboard Aurora’s modern small expedition ships.
Why we picked it
We picked this route for its combination of exceptional wildlife, varied landscapes and modern expedition ships. South Georgia remains the centrepiece: king penguin colonies, beaches crowded with wildlife and glaciated mountains create a scale that the Peninsula alone cannot match. Aurora adds X-Bow ships, strong activity choices and several route variations across multiple seasons.
Wildlife-focused travellers who want South Georgia and Antarctica on a modern expedition ship and can accommodate a longer journey.
Three major regions in one expedition, with South Georgia given enough time to be more than a brief stop.
It is a long voyage with several open-ocean passages. The fare and optional activities can rise quickly, and weather can still reduce time at individual sites.

Voyage overview
This is an expedition itinerary rather than a sequence of guaranteed ports. The captain and expedition leader adjust the programme for weather, ice, wildlife and local restrictions. We compare the available departures, ships and cabin costs before recommending a sailing.

Example itinerary: 25 October–14 November 2027
This 21-day Greg Mortimer programme (ASG100G) starts with a hotel night. Other departures differ; see the date, ship and route comparison below. Regional days are planned exploration time, not guaranteed landings.
Ushuaia and the South Atlantic
Day 1 is arrival in Ushuaia and the included hotel night; day 2 is embarkation; day 3 is at sea with briefings and wildlife watching.
Falkland Islands
Explore wildlife-rich coasts where albatrosses, penguins and broad beaches provide a distinct opening chapter.

At sea
Lectures and seabird watching continue as the ship crosses towards South Georgia.
South Georgia
Day 8 is arrival from sea; days 9–11 are three dedicated South Georgia exploration days; day 12 combines South Georgia with departure to sea. The team selects wildlife beaches, historic sites and bays according to conditions.

Wildlife, landscapes and life on expedition
This short Aurora Expeditions film offers a useful sense of the scale, wildlife encounters and expedition atmosphere that make South Georgia the centrepiece of this voyage.
Scotia Sea
Cross towards the Antarctic Peninsula with lectures, wildlife watches and expedition preparation.
Antarctic Peninsula
Four days are allocated to the Antarctic Peninsula region for landings and Zodiac cruising, subject to conditions.
Return journey
Days 19–20 cross the Drake Passage, with a possible final South Shetlands outing before departure on day 19. Day 21 is disembarkation in Ushuaia. The sail/fly departures below instead fly from King George Island to Punta Arenas.
The operating difference
Aurora’s Greg Mortimer, Sylvia Earle and Douglas Mawson normally carry about 130 guests in Antarctica. Their X-Bow can reduce bow slamming in head seas, a meaningful feature on an itinerary with long passages, while the guest count remains small enough for a comparatively nimble landing operation.
Modern spaces between expedition days
The exact ship varies by departure, but Aurora’s purpose-built vessels share a contemporary expedition style, with comfortable observation areas and spaces designed for briefings, lectures and relaxed time at sea.

A useful look at the accommodation
Cabin layouts and décor differ between ships and categories. We confirm the vessel, exact cabin type, location and current fare before recommending a departure.
