White Desert Antarctica
Fly from Cape Town into Antarctica’s interior for luxury camps, extraordinary landscapes and journeys to the emperor penguins or the South Pole.
A different way to experience Antarctica
White Desert opens up the continent’s interior without crossing the Drake Passage. The appeal is the landscape, the isolation and the chance to reach places such as the South Pole or an emperor penguin colony, with a comfortable camp to return to.
From our background in expedition guiding and photography, we know that choosing the right part of Antarctica matters as much as choosing the accommodation. We’ll help you decide whether this experience, a small-ship voyage, or a combination best fits what you want to see.

Three camps, different characters
Camp choice affects both the atmosphere and the price. Availability depends on the itinerary and departure.
Echo
Contemporary heated pods with expansive windows framing the ice and mountains. En-suite bathrooms with showers, a writing desk and storage make this an appealing choice for comfort and striking design.
Whichaway
A camp of six sleeping pods in a rocky Antarctic oasis, with lakes and a glacier nearby. Heated accommodation, en-suite showers and welcoming communal spaces give it a more traditional expedition feel.
Explorer

How does it compare with an expedition cruise?
Antarctica’s interior
White Desert focuses on inland landscapes, camp-based adventures and selected aircraft excursions. Emperor penguin visits and the South Pole feature on specific trips. These programmes do not visit South Georgia or provide a Peninsula cruise.
Peninsula & South Georgia voyages
For repeated coastal wildlife encounters, Zodiac outings and the possibility of sea kayaking, consider a small-ship expedition. South Georgia is particularly compelling for photographers seeking vast penguin colonies, seabirds and seals.
We can compare both approaches honestly, including how much time you will spend exploring, the wildlife you hope to see and the comfort you want between outings.
Planning your journey
Allow time in Cape Town on either side. White Desert recommends arriving at least two days before your planned Antarctic departure and allowing at least two days after your scheduled return. Antarctic flying remains weather-dependent, so flexible onward arrangements matter.
Overnight programmes generally include
- Return flights between Cape Town and Antarctica.
- Antarctic camp accommodation, meals and drinks.
- Activities and excursions specified in your programme.
- Cape Town briefing and the operator’s specified transfers.
- Selected polar clothing on loan, according to the kit list.
Budget separately for
- International travel to and from Cape Town.
- Cape Town hotels and meals.
- Comprehensive travel insurance and required personal gear.
- Extra Cape Town costs caused by weather delays.
- Excess baggage or arrangements outside your programme.
The day trip has different inclusions and baggage limits. We’ll review the specific terms with you and can guide your flight and hotel planning. Photographers should discuss camera baggage in advance. Connectivity and any essential work requirements should be confirmed before booking.
